Get the Math and Points! Aug 2014 CC Alg I #16

We will try n = 3 and n = 5 in each equation to see if the 3rd term is 10 and the 5th term is 26.

Using each answer with n=3 and looking for an answer of 10:
(1) 8n + 10,  substitute n = 3, 8(3) + 10 = 34 not 10!
(2) 8n – 14, substitute n=3, 8(3) – 14 = 10 keep this one
(3) 16n + 10, substitute n=3, 16(3) + 10 = 58 not 10!
(4) 16n – 38, substitute n=3, 16(3) – 38 = 10 keep this one

Now we have narrowed it down to either answer (2) or (4)
The fifth term is 26 so when n = 5, the answer should be 26
(2) 8n – 14 substitute n = 5, 8(5) -14 = 26!!!!
(4) 16n – 38, substitute n=5, 16(5) – 38 = 42 (not 26!)

That’s it for 2 more points!!  :)

When Will We Use Math? ACCUPLACER and COMPASS

In addition to Learn Pass Graduate for the Regents exam (more specifically, Common Core Algebra I) needed for a HS diploma in NY, there are other reasons to learn Math like being savvy about Finance, building critical thinking skills and developing persistence.  Click here for The Benefits of Learning Math.
There is another super important reason to learn Math: Placement testing!

Especially at the community college level — this goes for reading and writing as well.
If you can pass the placement test, you can take credit bearing non-remedial classes (if you do not pass the placement test, you can only take non-credit bearing remedial classes).

Look at these requirements from Herkimer Community College in upstate NY:

Many colleges use ACCUPLACER, made by the College Board,  for their placement testing. Here is a pdf of ACCUPLACER sample items and a free web based ACCUPLACER Study App

Some colleges use COMPASS, made by ACT, for their placement testing.
Here is a pdf of COMPASS sample items.

Learning Math gives people opportunity and  options for career and college!!

This is great practice for generating the Y= using the TI-84 linear regression feature
We must create 2 lists with Stats, Edit
Put the x values into L1 and the y values into L2
If there is already data in a list, press the up arrow until you get to L1 (or L2) and press clear, enter
Then Stats, right arrow, Calc, 4 enter for Linear regression and there you have it!!!
The equation of the line…match it up with one of the answers :)

One of the few things to memorize for the Regents is the formula for compound interest:
A = P(1 + r)^t
A is the account balance or amount
P is the principal or initial amount = 3000
r is the rate 4.2 % we need to convert this to a decimal

percent to decimal
t is time

so the equation is:
A = 3000 (1 + .042)^t     or it can be written as:  A = 3000 (1.042)^t
That’s it — just writing this equation is 2 points!!

How Regents Are Scored: Please Write Something :)

Students greatly benefit from knowing how the long answers on their  tests will be scored.

44% of the exam is now non-multiple choice (38/86 points) whereas the Integrated Algebra had only 30% of the points (26/86) as non-multiple choice.

Too often students leave these questions blank which yields, um, zero points.

So it is super important for students to answer as many of these questions as they can and have knowledge on how the grading is done.

Click for Model Response Set that shows “student work” for graders to have examples of what work looks like at different point levels.  For example, a 2 point question will have model responses that show 0, 1 and 2 points.

The Rating Guide has a broader rubric on how many points to award student work but this is often just a description so graders use both documents in the grading process.
