We will try n = 3 and n = 5 in each equation to see if the 3rd term is 10 and the 5th term is 26.

Using each answer with n=3 and looking for an answer of 10:

(1) 8n + 10, substitute n = 3, 8(3) + 10 = 34 not 10!

(2) 8n – 14, substitute n=3, 8(3) – 14 = 10 keep this one

(3) 16n + 10, substitute n=3, 16(3) + 10 = 58 not 10!

(4) 16n – 38, substitute n=3, 16(3) – 38 = 10 keep this one

Now we have narrowed it down to either answer (2) or (4)

The fifth term is 26 so when n = 5, the answer should be 26

(2) 8n – 14 substitute n = 5, 8(5) -14 = 26!!!!

(4) 16n – 38, substitute n=5, 16(5) – 38 = 42 (not 26!)

That’s it for 2 more points!! 🙂
