(1) hour 0 to hour 1, the y value changed from 0 to 2
(2) hour 1 to hour 2, the y value changed from 2 to 3.5
(3) hour 2 to hour 3, the y value changed from 3.5 to 4.5
(4) hour 3 to hour 4, the y value changed from 4.5 to 5
So which has the greatest rate of change?  We can also look at the graph and see the portion that is the steepest.

This is a substitution problem so let’s try answer choice (1) first
2(6+2)^2 – 4 is way more than 28

Let’s try answer choice (2):
2(2+2)^2 – 4 = 28  YUP :)

Since 2 works now we just have to see if -6 works as well:
2(-6+2)^2 – 4 = 28 YUP :)

OK back to our trusty TI-84.  Let’s enter all 4 and find the odd man out!

However, at x = -6, the y value is 115 and we are looking for -29, so it cannot be -6

At x = 6 below, you can see the y value is -29.
Also check out the symmetry of the y values and how the values are centered around (6,-29): this is what makes it the vertex or turning point.

We could also use the vertex form of a parabola but it  has a tricky negative sign issue which these answer choices prey upon.
Using the graph feature of the  TI-84 is also an option but since the normal viewing window is +/-10,  -29 would be outside that window.
